Albanian asylum applications in EU drop by 24%
Asylum applications from Albanian citizens in the EU decreased by 24% in the first quarter compared to the same period last year, marking the lowest level since the pandemic and less than half of those seen in the same period of 2019.
Why is this relevant
Following peak emigration in 2022 and 2023, Albanian emigration has slowed as economic growth and stability have increased job opportunities and economic prospects domestically.
According to data from Eurostat, in the first quarter of this year, Albanian nationals filed 2,050 asylum applications across the EU. France remained the top destination due to its social benefits, receiving 655 applications (32% of the total), marking a 38% drop from last year. Germany followed with 485 applications (24% of the total), experiencing a 22% decline. Italy saw a more modest decrease of 5%, with 445 applications (22% of the total).
