Two suspected terrorists arrested, third suspect under investigation

Albanian authorities are continuing investigations into a suspected terrorist plot involving two men arrested in Fushë Arrëz, with growing evidence pointing to the involvement of a third accomplice. Erzen (Hamza) Uka and Julian (Adem) Cumraku were apprehended after a 12-hour standoff with RENEA forces, barricaded inside a fortified tower in the remote village of Orosh.

Why is this important: The case has raised serious concerns about the presence of radical elements and potential threats to public safety. Authorities believe the two suspects may have been preparing a terrorist act and were supported logistically by a third man, who remains at large.

Context: Sources confirmed that Uka and Cumraku were seen in Fushë Arrëz accompanied by a man with long hair, wearing camouflage clothing, who reportedly traveled frequently between Tirana and the mountainous area. Surveillance footage and eyewitness accounts place him with the suspects just days before the arrest, often remaining in the background while the pair made local purchases.

Investigators say this third individual may have helped transport supplies and assisted in preparations. He has yet to be identified.

Weapons cache and ISIS flag discovered:

Following their surrender, police uncovered a large weapons arsenal inside the abandoned tower, including:

  • 4 automatic rifles
  • 1 pistol
  • 17 hand grenades
  • 2,000 rounds of ammunition
  • Detonator caps and igniter cord
  • An ISIS flag displayed on the wall

Religious links and silence in custody: The two men reportedly attended Friday prayers at a mosque in the village of Kryezi, which is outside the control of the official Muslim Community of Albania. Both suspects have refused to cooperate with investigators, stating that they “will only be judged by God” and referring to law enforcement as “devils.”

Uka was treated for a leg wound at Shkodra’s regional hospital after his arrest.

Ongoing investigation: The Shkodra Prosecutor’s Office is pursuing charges including incitement to commit terrorist acts, production of illegal weapons, resisting police, and possession of explosives. A former investigation into Uka’s radical ties was conducted in 2019.

The third suspect remains a key figure in the ongoing probe.
