Belarusian opposition leader Tsikhanouskaya honored in Tirana

Belarusian opposition leader Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya was awarded the “Key to the City” by Tirana’s mayor, Erion Veliaj, during her visit to the “Free Cities Pact” summit. Veliaj emphasized Albania’s open support for democratic movements in Belarus and pledged further collaboration.
Why is this important: Tsikhanouskaya has been one of the main leaders of the protest and opposition to Belarus’ authoritarian regime. Her recognition in Tirana is a reflection of Albania’s support for the Belarus opposition’s struggle.
What was said: Veliaj called the key a symbol of Tirana’s solidarity. “Here, you’ll always find an open door, mind, and heart,” he said. Tsikhanouskaya expressed gratitude for Albania’s support of Belarus’ democratic struggle.
What’s next: Veliaj also promised support for Belarusian students seeking to study in Tirana, similar to assistance provided to Ukrainian students amid their country’s conflict.
