Albania has seen a significant surge in air passenger traffic, with over 8.2 million passengers processed at Tirana’s “Mother Teresa” International Airport in the first nine months of 2024. This marks a 53.7% increase compared to the same period in 2023. Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Infrastructure, Belinda Balluku, highlighted this impressive growth in a recent press conference reviewing the 2024 summer tourism season.
Why is this important: The rapid growth in air travel signals Albania’s transformation into a key player in the regional tourism market. Airport expansions and the introduction of new airlines have boosted Albania’s appeal, enhancing its global connectivity. This surge could increase tourism revenues, generate thousands of jobs, and secure Albania’s place as a strategic travel hub.
Context: Tirana International Airport has consistently surpassed expectations, handling 53,320 flights in the first nine months of 2024, an increase of 44.5% from 2023. Balluku estimates that the airport could serve 10.4 million passengers by year’s end, potentially exceeding that number.
Growth factors: Key factors behind this growth include the entry of new airlines and an increase in international destinations, which jumped from 109 in 2023 to 136 in 2024. Low-cost carriers like Ryanair and Wizz Air have made Albania more accessible, offering frequent, affordable flights to cities like London, Paris, and Vienna.
In addition, Vlora Airport, set to be completed by 2025, is poised to further enhance Albania’s aviation sector. Equipped with a 3.2 km runway and capable of handling transoceanic flights, the new airport will help Albania attract travelers from North America and Asia, broadening its reach in the global market.
Looking ahead: These advancements in aviation infrastructure are key to Albania’s rise as a tourism destination. With more destinations and upgraded facilities, the country is on a promising trajectory to welcome even more international visitors in the years to come.
