Thumanë – Kashar Highway to open on June 30
The opening date was announced by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure and Energy, Belinda Balluku.
Why is this relevant
The highway is expected to immediately improve connectivity between northern and southern Albania. Unlike the south, where road infrastructure is more developed and extensive, northern Albania’s connection to Tirana and the south of the country has thus far relied on a highway that has been insufficient to handle traffic, especially during the tourist season.
In the longer term, the Thumanë – Kashar highway is a crucial segment of the Milot – Fier Highway, which is part of the Adriatic – Ionian or Blue Corridor project. This 1560 km European and Mediterranean corridor will significantly enhance connectivity in the Adriatic – Ionian region, linking Montenegro and Albania to Greece in the south and Croatia and the Mediterranean Ring in the north. The entire length of the Blue Corridor will be a toll highway and is expected to serve as the backbone of Albania’s tourism infrastructure by 2030.
Unlike other highways in the country, the speed limit on this Category A axis will be 130 km/hour.
