Special Parliamentary Commission calls for support in anti-corruption efforts

In a move aimed at intensifying the fight against corruption, the Special Parliamentary Commission on the Deepening of Reforms on Good Governance, Rule of Law and Anti-Corruption, known colloquially as the Special Commission Against Corruption, has officially reached out to judicial institutions, parliamentary parties, and media outlets, urging them to assist the Commission with experts. Chairman Fatmir Xhafaj and the Socialist members of the commission approved the request, offering assurances that any analysis or expertise will be independent and valuable to the commission’s work.

Why is this relevant

Currently, the opposition is not participating in the Commission. However, the Socialists continue to extend an olive branch to the Democrats in an effort to join forces in addressing one of the most concerning issues in Albania’s 30-year post-communist history, that affects both the local and central government as well as independent institutions, and ultimately impacts on the country’s citizens. The request by the ruling majority for experts to be involved in the special commission is conceived as a guarantee that the opposition’s opinions and recommendations on fighting corruption will be taken into consideration.

This initiative underscores Albania’s ongoing efforts to combat corruption effectively, reflecting a desire for a collaborative approach that rises above political differences. As the commission seeks broader support, its independence and inclusivity are critical in shaping policies and strategies to tackle corruption comprehensively.
