SPAK sends Ilir Meta and Monika Kryemadhi to trial on corruption and money laundering charges

The Special Prosecution (SPAK) has sent former president Ilir Meta and MP Monika Kryemadhi to trial, announcing three charges against them: corruption, money laundering, and failure to declare assets.
Why is this important: This case targets two of Albania’s most prominent political figures, marking one of SPAK’s highest-profile prosecutions since its creation. The proceedings will test the strength of judicial reform and the credibility of anti-corruption efforts in the country.
Context: Alongside Meta and Kryemadhi, the prosecution has indicted Fatime Kryemadhi, Monika Kryemadhi’s mother, and Ema Çoku on suspicions of aiding money laundering. Former AKEP chairman Pirro Xhixho will also face trial for corruption in connection with the same file.
SPAK said investigations uncovered multiple corruption schemes and misuse of political power. “Investigations revealed a series of corrupt schemes, the use of influence and political power to favor certain businesses in exchange for rewards received or promised, laundering of criminal proceeds, and concealment of assets or failure to declare significant expenses in periodic asset declarations,” the institution stated.
The prosecution added that the probe involved cooperation with authorities in the United States, Austria, Italy, San Marino, and Cyprus.
The Special Court is expected to set a preliminary hearing in September to examine SPAK’s request to try Meta and Kryemadhi. Both have publicly rejected the charges, labeling the investigation politically motivated.
Next steps: A date will be determined by the Special Court in September, marking the start of what could become one of Albania’s most consequential corruption trials.
