Socialists defend Shkodra entry project amid opposition criticism
The Socialist Party of Shkodër defended the ongoing construction of the city’s entry project, rejecting accusations from the Democratic Party (PD) of legal violations. The Socialists emphasized that the project, which aims to create a 19-hectare public space along the Buna River and Lake Shkodër, is being implemented legally and will transform a rundown area into a high-quality public space.
The controversy
The Socialists’ response came after PD’s Shkodër branch accused the government of breaking the law in the project’s execution. The Socialists criticized PD’s stance, highlighting that the opposition has frequently shifted its position on the project.
“During the campaign, the PD said it was just a 3D project that would never happen. Now, with construction underway, they claim it’s against Shkodër’s interests. This inconsistency shows a lack of genuine concern for the city,” the statement read.
Context
Shkodër, known for its cultural heritage, has historically lagged in development due to limited investment. The Socialists, who won the municipality of Shkodra for the first time ever last year are doing their best to deliver on their promises to an electorate that over the decades had always staunchly supported their Democrat opponents. The Government and the Prime Minister that has made Shkodra his personal priority have prioritized infrastructure projects aimed at restoring the city’s status as the key economic and cultural hub of northern Albania.
What was said
The Socialists highlighted that the entry project was a central part of the “Positive Shkodër” program supported by the current mayor and national government. They emphasized that the project has widespread support among residents, including property owners set to be impacted.
The PD of Shkodër on the other hand, argued that no viable alternatives have been provided for affected businesses, leaving over 300 families without income. The PD demanded fair compensation at market value for property owners and criticized the government’s handling of traffic issues related to the new entry.
The clash over the Shkodër entry project reflects ongoing tensions between the ruling Socialists and the opposition but it also feeds into a longer pattern of behavior. Over the decades, the Democratic Party has opposed – at times violently – every single major public project implemented by a Socialist administration, despite the clear public support for these projects.
