Russian airstrikes damage Albanian Embassy in Kyiv

The Albanian Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs has released details about the damage sustained by the Albanian Embassy in Kyiv during a series of Russian airstrikes on Friday morning. The strikes, which targeted multiple areas in the Ukrainian capital, are being labeled as a violation of the Vienna Convention, which guarantees the inviolability of international diplomatic missions.

Why is this important: The attack, which partially damaged the embassy’s façade and several interior spaces, also impacted embassies of five other nations, endangering the lives of diplomatic personnel. While no injuries were reported, the incident represents a grave breach of international norms and the safety of diplomatic missions. In 2023 Albania’s consular building in Kharkiv was also hit by Russian strikes.

Context: The Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs strongly condemned the attacks, emphasizing that such acts undermine the very foundations of international diplomacy.

“This senseless act is not just an attack on a building but on the core principles of diplomacy itself. The protection of diplomatic staff and the inviolability of missions are non-negotiable principles that must be respected and upheld without exception,” read the Ministry’s statement.

Albania has been an active supporter of Ukraine throughout the war.
