Renowned director Pirro Milkani passes away at the age of 86

Pirro Milkani, one of the most influential figures in Albanian cinema, has died at the age of 86. The news was confirmed on Saturday by his son, director Eno Milkani, who wrote in a heartfelt social media post: “My father, my friend, and my colleague is gone.”

Milkani leaves behind a profound artistic legacy that has helped shape Albanian culture for more than half a century. Widely considered a pioneer of Albanian filmmaking, his contributions are seen as foundational to the development of national cinema.

He is best known for directing iconic films such as “Ngadhnjim mbi vdekjen” (Triumph Over Death), “Çifti i lumtur” (The Happy Couple), and “Zonja nga qyteti” (The Lady from the City). These works remain deeply embedded in Albania’s cultural identity and collective memory.

Born on January 5, 1939, in Drenovë, Korçë, Milkani was among the first generation of Albanian filmmakers. His career spanned several decades, during which he directed both narrative films and documentaries that captured key aspects of Albanian life and history.

In addition to his directing work, Milkani was a dedicated educator who mentored generations of aspiring Albanian filmmakers. He was admired for his wisdom, warmth, and generosity, and was regarded as a living archive of Kinostudio’s rich history.
