Rama backs U.S. strike, slams Iran’s theocracy as a “unique aberration” openly calling for extermination

Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama has declared full support for the recent U.S. attack on Iran’s nuclear program, calling President Trump’s efforts “sincere” and warning that Tehran’s regime poses a uniquely dangerous threat to global security.

Why is this important: Rama’s statement firmly positions Albania among the countries backing American strikes on Iranian targets. It reinforces Tirana’s strategic alignment with Washington and highlights Albania’s long-standing opposition to the Iranian regime, especially in light of its past cyberattacks against Albanian public infrastructure.

Context: In a post on platform X, Rama referred to Iran not just as a dictatorship with nuclear ambitions, but as a theocracy with “apocalyptic rhetoric,” calling it a “unique aberration” among states. He wrote:

“This is not just another nuclear state. Nor is it just a dictatorship with nuclear ambitions. This is a theocracy – armed with apocalyptic rhetoric, steeped in endless years of labeling free nations as ‘Satanic’ and openly calling for their extermination.”

Rama linked Albania’s support for the U.S. to the country’s own history under a brutal atheist dictatorship and its current role as a member of the free world:

“As a nation that has emerged from the abyss of a harsh atheocratic regime, as a proud member of the free world, and as a strategic partner of the United States, Albania stands strongly behind President Trump’s sincere efforts to prevent the theocratic regime in Tehran from ever possessing nuclear weapons.”

What else: Relations between Albania and Iran collapsed in 2022 after Homeland Justice, a group tied to the Iranian Ministry of Intelligence and Security, carried out a massive cyberattack on Albanian government systems—reportedly in retaliation for Albania’s decision to host the exiled Iranian opposition group Mujahedin-e Khalq (MEK). In response, Albania expelled Iranian diplomats and severed all ties, a move praised by Washington.
