PS Parliamentary Group convenes to discuss Electoral Reform and legislative agenda

The Parliamentary Group of the Socialist Party held their final meeting of this session today. Group Chairman Bledi Çuçi briefed the deputies on the issues and bills to be discussed in the upcoming plenary session, which will extend over two days, Thursday and Friday, due to the high number of acts on the agenda.

Why is this relevant

One of the most important issues under discussion is the electoral reform. Changes to the Electoral Code, especially the introduction of external voting mechanisms for Albanians living abroad, are on the table and must be agreed upon if external voting is to be implemented for the 2025 elections.

Context

Chairman Çuçi informed the deputies that the proposals from the Dialogue Group on Electoral Reform are still under political discussion. If consensus is reached, he added, these proposals will be presented during Friday’s July 24 session. This reflects the Socialist Party’s commitment to evolving the electoral framework to better serve the nation’s democratic needs.

Previous sessions have underscored the necessity of electoral reform to address longstanding issues in the voting process. The potential adoption of these reforms is a crucial step towards modernizing Albania’s electoral system, particularly by enabling external voting for the significant number of Albanians residing abroad.

The session will also include two interpellations with the Minister of Finances and the Minister of Economy, Culture and Innovation, annual reports from several independent institutions, and bills such as the “State Police Act” and the “Regulation of the Production, Trade, Research, and Development of Weapons, Ammunition, Military Equipment, and Technologies.” Several other acts are also scheduled for discussion.

The meeting also included discussions on various community issues raised by deputies according to their respective constituencies. These discussions are vital for addressing local concerns and ensuring that the legislative agenda reflects the needs of all regions.
