The Special Court has scheduled a preliminary hearing for Sali Berisha and four other defendants on October 24 at 12:00. The defendants face charges ranging from passive and active corruption to money laundering.
Why is this important: This hearing marks a significant step in the judicial process against Berisha, Albania’s former prime minister, who has been accused of corruption and money laundering alongside close associates. The outcome of these proceedings could have major political implications, given Berisha’s prominent role in the opposition and ongoing legal troubles. It also remains to be seen how the opposition will react to this development. Over the several weeks it has steadily escalated its protests and violent acts in what is interpreted by many in Albania as a reaction to Berisha’s legal troubles. In recent days the tensions have escalated significantly, with opposition MPs engaging in violent acts in Parliament and Berisha himself issuing virulent attacks and threats against the Government and the justice system.
Key findings: Berisha and the other defendants stand accused of serious financial crimes, including high-level corruption and laundering the proceeds of criminal activities.
The Defendants and their charges:
- Sali Berisha: Charged with passive corruption of high officials, committed in cooperation (Articles 260 and 25 of the Penal Code).
- Jamarbër Malltezi: Accused of passive corruption of high officials and money laundering, committed in cooperation (Articles 260, 25, and 287 of the Penal Code).
- Fatmir Bektashi: Charged with active corruption of high officials and money laundering, committed in cooperation (Articles 245 and 287).
- Xhimi Begeja: Accused of money laundering, committed in cooperation (Article 287).
- Andia Pustina: Charged with money laundering during professional activities, committed in cooperation (Article 287).
What’s next: The preliminary hearing will be closely watched as it could shape the future of Berisha’s political career and the credibility of Albania’s anti-corruption efforts. With Berisha already facing house arrest and international sanctions, this trial could add further pressure on his leadership and disrupt the opposition’s activities.
