Parliament fines MPs 730,000 Lek for unjustified absences
The Albanian Parliament’s Finance Directorate has imposed fines totaling 730,000 Lek on MPs from both major political factions due to their unjustified absences or failure to participate in parliamentary activities.
Context
In Albania, the Labor Code stipulates financial penalties for employees who violate their employment contracts by missing work without valid reasons or abusing work hours. However, this marks the first time such penalties have been applied to lawmakers or politicians, who have traditionally been viewed as privileged.
The MPs most affected by these penalties are from the opposition. Despite not being in power, these lawmakers are expected to be fully engaged in parliamentary duties.
