The Secretary General, the head of the parliamentary group, and the organizational secretary of the Democratic Party (DP), have been placed under investigation for organizing an illegal protest. This follows the violent demonstration led by the opposition in Tirana on Monday, October 7. Tirana police arrested one protester for “Assault due to duty” and “Destruction of property by fire.” Three others, including two minors, aged 16 and 17, are also under investigation for “Disturbing public order,” “Destruction of property,” and “Opposition to police officers.” Nine additional protesters, believed to have thrown Molotov cocktails, are currently wanted by police.

Why is it important: The opposition’s protest was marked by instances of intense violence, targeting key government institutions such as the Prime Minister’s office, City Hall, the Ministry of Interior, and the Parliament. Molotov cocktails were thrown, injuring police officers and causing damage to public property. Ten police officers were injured, three of whom were hospitalized overnight with serious burns.

Context: Many protesters wore masks and black hoods, obscuring their identities while engaging in acts of vandalism. They destroyed advertising boards, bus stations, and trash bins. The police responded to the escalating violence with tear gas. Additionally, protesters blocked key roads in Tirana as part of their so-called civil disobedience. This unprecedented action, organized by a political force, led to traffic chaos. The roadblocks affected emergency services, with ambulances delayed. One pregnant woman, unable to reach the hospital in time, gave birth to her daughter in a car.

Conclusion: The aftermath of the violent protest has sparked investigations into key Democratic Party leaders, raising concerns about the opposition’s approach and their role in inciting violence. The event has also highlighted the potential misuse of minors and youth in politically charged demonstrations.
