Newly discovered monumental tombs in Amantia now open for visitors

The Regional Directorate of Cultural Heritage in Vlorë has announced that tourists can now explore a group of monumental tombs located at the entrance of the Archaeological Park of Amantia.

Amantia was an ancient city and the main settlement of the Amantes tribe, located in southern Illyria. Founded in the V century BC it holds historical significance as one of the key settlements in the region during antiquity.

During the month of June, a team of archaeologists and restorers from the Regional Directorate of Cultural Heritage in Vlorë conducted extensive excavations, revealing yet another monumental tomb at the entry point of the Archaeological Park of Amantia. Situated alongside the road connecting the villages of Ploçë and Amonicë in the Municipality of Selenicë, the newly discovered tomb was identified during salvage archaeological excavations conducted back in 2020.

According to preliminary findings by the Regional Directorate for Cultural Heritage in Vlorë, the monumental tomb was utilized for burials dating from the 1st to the 2nd century BC. The tomb contains a constructed burial chamber composed of stone blocks, with particular attention drawn to the internal layout of the chamber. Among the artifacts discovered are primarily fragments of ceramic vessels, a few intact pottery items, fragmented glass vessels, and several metal objects.

Surrounding the monumental tomb, additional tombs from the same historical period were found and documented, all characterized by their tiled construction. Alongside the initial conservation efforts, specialists from the Regional Directorate of Cultural Heritage in Vlorë are actively developing a detailed restoration and museumization project aimed at preserving and showcasing this significant archaeological monument.
