New York Mayor Eric Adams visits Albania to explore business and tourism opportunities

New York City Mayor Eric Adams arrived in Albania on Sunday for a four-day visit focused on strengthening ties in business, tourism, and innovation. On Monday, he is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Edi Rama in the coastal city of Vlora.

Why is this important: Adams’s visit reflects growing U.S.-Albania cooperation and recognition of the strong Albanian-American community in New York, home to more than 60,000 ethnic Albanians. The trip is also seen as a step toward expanding tourism and direct economic links between the two countries.

Context: Speaking to Albanian media, Adams said his trip had been long planned:

“Several years ago, my son performed here and told me how wonderful this country is. I promised Prime Minister Rama I would come to see the opportunities in business and tourism, and to discuss public safety issues. Now is the right time because I want to see innovation.”

Adams added that Albania’s potential in tourism and its welcoming atmosphere impressed him:

“This is a beautiful country. People are friendly, and public safety is exceptional. You can walk at any hour and feel welcome.”

The mayor said discussions are underway to promote Albania in New York tourism campaigns and even explore direct flights between New York and Tirana, following similar arrangements with other countries.

Calling Vlora “a stunning city,” Adams said he hopes to encourage more New Yorkers to visit Albania — and more Albanians to visit New York.

What else: According to his spokesperson Kayla Mamelak, the visit includes meetings with Albanian government officials, business leaders, and technology entrepreneurs “to identify new opportunities for economic and tourism cooperation.”

U.S. media have reported that Adams’s flights were paid by New York City, while his local accommodation and security are covered by the Albanian government.

Earlier this year, Adams hosted an Albanian cultural celebration at Gracie Mansion and marched in the Albanian Parade in New York.

Adams, who recently announced he will not seek re-election, described New York as “the America of Albanians,” emphasizing the close historic bond between the two communities.
