National Museum to undergo major reconstruction

The National Historical Museum is set to undergo a significant reconstruction project. During this period, the museum will be closed to visitors, and its collection of approximately 6,500 historical objects will be packed and organized within the museum premises while work continues. The reconstruction is expected to take four years.
Why it matters
Inaugurated on October 28, 1981, the National Historical Museum has not undergone a complete overhaul in its 43-year history. This major renovation will be the first extensive intervention for the building, which houses over 6,500 artifacts.
The €6.4 million investment will cover various technical upgrades, including roof insulation, electrical work, fire protection measures, as well as new furnishings and museum-specific enhancements.
The Ministry of Economy and Culture states that the first phase of the project involves the packing and relocation of archaeological artifacts and all other displayed and non-displayed items from the museum’s collection. These items will be moved within the museum’s premises according to all standards for preserving museum objects during the building’s restoration and renovation processes.
