Lulzim Basha promotes economic vision at Global Competitiveness Forum
Lulzim Basha, leader of the Democratic Party – Euro-Atlantic Democrats, shared his vision for transforming Albania into a regional technology hub at a prestigious panel organized by the Global Federation of Competitiveness Councils. The event, attended by global policymakers and corporate leaders, centered on the impact of technology and artificial intelligence on society and the labor market.
Why is this important: Lulzim Basha has been largely absent from Albania’s political scene in recent months, making only occasional comments on current events. However, his reappearance on the political stage could prove significant with the upcoming elections in view. Once a trusted ally of Sali Berisha, Basha rose to prominence under Berisha’s leadership, holding key government positions and eventually becoming Chairman of the Democratic Party. Their relationship deteriorated when Basha asked Berisha to step aside after the United States designated Berisha as non grata. Berisha, insisting that the party dedicate all its efforts to supporting him against what he called a conspiracy, expelled Basha, causing a major rift within the party.
Economic vision: Basha outlined his economic program, which focuses on modernizing Albania through investments in technology and artificial intelligence. His plan includes:
- Educational reform: A comprehensive overhaul of higher education to prepare young professionals for a modern job market, in collaboration with the government, foreign investors, and local partners.
- Training initiatives: Professional training for 25,000 young Albanians in the technology sector, facilitated by top European and American experts, aiming for a minimum average salary of 2,000 euros per month.
- Paid internships: Offering one-year paid internships for 5,000 non-university young people and 5,000 recent graduates, with a guaranteed minimum wage.
- Flat tax rate: Implementation of a 9% flat tax to stimulate private enterprise and attract investment.
What did he say: “It was a pleasure to discuss the vision of the Euro-Atlantic Democrats for Albania’s future governance at the Global Federation of Competitiveness Councils. With talented youth and immense potential, Albania can become a regional leader in technology and attract significant investments. We have developed an economic model that promotes private initiative and entrepreneurship, backed by a transparent and efficient government. Our program, ‘A New Economy for a New Generation,’ aims to create opportunities and hope for the youth of Albania.”
