The Regional Directorate of Cultural Heritage Shkodra has inspected the ongoing emergency stabilization efforts of the northern wall at Lezha Castle, a significant historical site dominating the city of Lezhë in northern Albania. This initiative is part of a broader reconstruction package following damage sustained during an earthquake. The project focuses on ensuring the architectural preservation, protection, and security of the monument, which began as an Illyrian fortification and was later rebuilt by the Venetians in the 1440s and the Ottomans in 1522.
Why is this important: The preservation of Lezha Castle not only protects a significant cultural and historical site but also contributes to the broader understanding of urban development in ancient cities. This project is vital for maintaining the integrity and historical value of the site, ensuring it remains a testament to the area’s rich heritage. Lezhë Castle stands at an elevation of 322 meters (1,056 ft) with its highest point reaching 186 meters (610 ft), making it a prominent landmark.
Context: The project has successfully completed its archaeological excavation phase, clearing a segment of the wall from debris, which has revealed new archaeological data and artifacts about the upper city of Lissus. These findings have been thoroughly documented by the licensed archaeological entity IKTK and DRTK Shkodra.
The structural integrity of the castle’s perimeter wall, particularly on its northern side near a circular tower with polygonal stones, presents significant challenges, including a deep crack running the full height of the wall and a noticeable tilt.
The next phase of the project, focusing on architectural reinforcement and restoration, will adopt a methodology that emphasizes minimal intervention, primarily using original materials to consolidate the structure of the monument.
What’s next: As the project progresses, the focus will shift towards architectural strengthening and restorative efforts to ensure the structural stability of Lezha Castle. This careful and considerate approach aims to preserve the castle’s historical integrity while providing insights into the architectural practices of the past.
