Kosovo Prime Minister criticizes EU visa decision for Serb passport holders

Prime Minister Albin Kurti of Kosovo criticized the European Union’s decision to lift visa requirements for Kosovo citizens holding passports issued by Serbia’s Coordination Directorate.
Why is this relevant
Kosovo does not recognize passports issued by Serbia’s Coordination Directorate, which operates under Serbia’s Ministry of Interior in Belgrade. For instance, holders of these passports cannot use them to fly out of Pristina Airport. Kosovo is actively encouraging Serbian citizens to obtain Kosovo passports, which are recognized for visa-free travel within the EU since January 1 2024.
Context
Kurti made his remarks during the inauguration of the renovated Cardio-surgery Clinic of the University Clinical Center of Pristina. Calling the move “unfair and damaging,” Kurti expressed concerns that it could hinder the integration of Kosovo Serbs, but acknowledged the limited influence Kosovo has over decisions made in Brussels, underscoring the frustration felt within the government regarding the decision.
The decision by EU Foreign Ministers, approved on July 22, marks a significant change for Kosovo Serbs, who previously needed visas to travel within the Schengen Area despite holding passports issued by Serbia’s Coordination Directorate. The proposal to lift these visa requirements had been under consideration since November of the previous year.
The visa issue adds to existing tensions between Kosovo and Serbia, which have long been strained due to historical disputes and differing views on Kosovo’s status. This development highlights the complexities of European integration efforts in the region.
