Kosovo population census 2024: less than 1.6 million residents registered
According to the final report by the Kosovo Agency of Statistics (ASK) on the 2024 population census, Kosovo’s registered population stands at 1,586,659. Radio Free Europe reports that the census process faced significant challenges, particularly in northern municipalities, where the process was largely boycotted by the Serb minority.
Context: The acting director of ASK, stated during a press conference in Pristina that the agency estimates Kosovo’s total resident population to be 1,602,515. However, the figure excludes the diaspora, whose registration is ongoing. Currently, around 500,000 individuals from Kosovo’s diaspora have been recorded.
In the previous 2011 census, Kosovo’s population was approximately 1.7 million. In 2011 too, the census saw significant boycotts from Serb-majority areas.
Key findings:
- Median age: The median age of Kosovo’s population has increased to 34.84 years, compared to 29.97 in 2011, indicating an aging population.
- Homeownership: 92.8% of Kosovo residents own their homes, while 5.3% live in rental properties.
- Household size: The average household size has dropped by 26.6% since 2011, from 5.90 persons per household to 4.33 in 2024.
Why is this important: The census results show that Kosovo is undergoing similar demographic shifts, including an aging population and decreasing household size. These changes will have a significant impact on Kosovo’s economic planning, public services, and policy development.
