“K’cimi i Tropojës” added to UNESCO’s List of Intangible Cultural Heritage

Albania’s rich cultural legacy has gained further global recognition as “Kcimi i Tropojës” (The Tropoja Dance) has been inscribed on UNESCO’s list of intangible cultural heritage. This designation elevates the traditional dance from the northernmost Tropoja region to the status of a cultural treasure of humanity.

Why is this important: “Kcimi i Tropojës” becomes the fourth Albanian intangible tradition to join UNESCO’s prestigious list, following Isopolyphony, Xhubleta, and Transhumance. This milestone not only preserves the heritage of northern Albania but also celebrates its global importance.

Context: Known locally as “Kcimi i Venit,” (The Local Dance) this vibrant and energetic dance has been safeguarded through centuries. It is characterized by rhythmic movements that carry symbolic meanings, deeply rooted in the identity of Tropoja and the Highlands of Gjakova that span both northern Albania and Kosovo. While today it is performed at joyous occasions by all, the traditional elements of the dance remain a marker of cultural authenticity.

Context: The nomination process began in 2016, culminating with the submission of the dossier in 2020. Skënder Haklaj, a member of the team behind the application, returned from Italy to collect and document the dance’s history, ensuring its place in UNESCO.

Broader impact: The inclusion of “Kcimi i Tropojës” in UNESCO’s heritage list not only safeguards the tradition for future generations but also promotes on a global scale. It serves as a platform for cultural exchange and highlights Albania’s diverse intangible heritage as a treasure for humanity.
