Italy to convert Albania’s migrant centers into repatriation facilities

The Italian government is set to formalize a decision on Friday to repurpose the Shëngjin and Gjadër migrant centers in Albania. Initially planned as temporary facilities for migrants rescued at sea, the centers will now be used to house asylum seekers whose applications have been rejected, awaiting repatriation. The decree, consisting of just two articles, will see migrants registered at Shëngjin before being transferred to Gjadër, where they may stay for up to 18 months. The opposition has criticized the move, with Democratic Party leader Elly Schlein arguing that it violates EU law and could require changes to the Rama-Meloni agreement.
