In party Congress Edi Rama reshuffles government ahead of upcoming elections
Ten months before the next elections, during the Congress of the Socialist Party, Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama has restructured his government, appointing new figures to key ministerial positions. The Ministries of Internal Affairs, Defense, and Finance will now be led by individuals who are currently senior directors, with good technical credentials, but without a prominent political profile or party connections.
Why is this relevant
This government overhaul is seen as a strategic move by Rama to refresh the administration and strengthen its performance ahead of the elections. The new appointments reflect a shift towards technocratic leadership in key ministries, signaling a potential new direction for the Albanian government.
What are the changes
In this latest shake-up, Niko Peleshi will leave his role as Minister of Defense to assume the position of Head of the Parliamentary Group. He will be succeeded by Pirro Vëngu, the current Director of the Durrës Port Authority.
Taulant Balla is stepping down as Minister of Internal Affairs to take on the role of Minister of State for Parliamentary Relations, a position formerly held by Elisa Spiropali. Spiropali is set to become the new Speaker of Parliament, replacing Lindita Nikolla, who resigned due to health reasons. Balla’s departure from the Interior Ministry will see Ervin Hoxhaj, who previously served as Director of the National Inspectorate for the Protection of the Territory, proposed by Rama to the President as the new Minister of Internal Affairs.
Another surprise for the Socialist Party is the appointment of Petrit Malaj, the current Director of the National Agency for Natural Resources, as the new Minister of Finance. Malaj will replace Ervin Meta, who has held the position for less than a year.
