In embarrassing moment for DP, Chris LaCivita laughs off Albania campaign in Guardian sting video

The American political strategist hired by Albania’s Democratic Party (DP), was caught on video laughing when asked about his role in the country’s election campaign. The footage, released by The Guardian, shows LaCivita reacting with amusement, calling Albania “the only place where U.S. election interference is encouraged.”
Why is this important: DP has heavily promoted LaCivita as a high-level asset in its fight to regain power. His mocking tone and apparent detachment raise doubts about his commitment and the integrity of the campaign.
Context: The footage is part of an undercover investigation by The Guardian in collaboration with Correctiv and the Centre for Climate Reporting. Reporters posed as prospective clients seeking political consulting. During two video calls, LaCivita described his involvement with campaigns in both Australia and Albania. He confirmed a recent visit to Australia, saying he was advising the Liberal Party on “structural issues” related to opposition leader Peter Dutton. He emphasized it was a private, unofficial trip and was done quietly to preserve “freedom of movement.”
In contrast, when asked about his high-profile engagement with Albania’s PD, LaCivita laughed. His response suggested that, while DP portrays him as a serious strategist, he views the job as more of a curious exception.
Fallout: DP’s partnership with LaCivita was initially promoted as a strategic victory, touting his experience with Donald Trump’s 2024 campaign. However, the leaked footage may undermine that narrative. The cost of hiring LaCivita has not been disclosed, drawing criticism from both political opponents and transparency advocates. His dismissive attitude in the video suggests he may see the role as transactional rather than strategic.
The timing is also awkward. With elections approaching, DP was hoping to leverage LaCivita’s credibility as a campaign heavyweight. Instead, the video fuels criticism that the party is outsourcing its politics to consultants with little stake in Albania’s future.
What else: The Australian Liberal Party has publicly denied any involvement with LaCivita. A spokesperson said he was not advising their campaign and had never met Peter Dutton. LaCivita echoed that claim, saying he only consulted private interests. Still, the sting video suggests he was offering input on campaign direction, raising questions about integrity and transparency.
What’s net: For Albania’s opposition, the LaCivita story is becoming a liability. While it began as a talking point of strength, it now risks making the party look unserious and externally manipulated. The footage undercuts claims of strategic depth and opens DP to criticism over misuse of funds.
