Ilir Meta seeks lighter security measure after SPAK closes investigation

Ilir Meta, leader of the Freedom Party, has asked the Special Court to replace his “arrest in prison” detention with a more lenient measure. Meta has been in custody since last October on charges of corruption, money laundering and asset concealment.

Why is this important: Through his lawyer, Meta argued that easing his pretrial restriction poses no risk to the integrity of evidence now that SPAK has formally closed its probe. He also contends that, as an active politician and party leader, the court should have considered his public responsibilities before ordering continued imprisonment.

Context: SPAK notified Meta that investigations have concluded in the case against him. Alongside Meta, former spouse Monika Kryemadhi, her mother, and several associates face related counts involving using illegal funds for U.S. lobbying, the so-called Cez-Dia affair and an asset review of the Meta–Kryemadhi couple.

In his petition, Meta’s legal counsel suggests the Special Court of First Instance substitute his in-prison detention with a restriction outside the prison, noting that “SPA K has completed its investigation” and highlighting his ongoing political role as chair of the Freedom Party—which the court allegedly overlooked.

What else: Meta has been one of the most important politicians of Albania’s transition, holding the positions of Prime Minister, Foreign Minister, Minister of the Economy, Deputy Prime Minister,Speaker of Parliament and President (2017–2022).

Next steps: The Special Court will review Meta’s request at its next session. Judges will balance the need to secure evidence against Meta’s arguments on proportionality and his public duties. If approved, Meta could be transferred to a house-arrest or similarly limited regime pending trial.
