Historic meeting between Pope Francis and Global Bektashi leader
Pope Francis met with the Global Bektashi Leader, His Holiness Haxhi Dede Edmond Brahimaj, in a landmark meeting. According to journalists present in the meeting, Pope Francis gave his blessing to the creation of a sovereign Bektashi state, calling it a “beautiful initiative.”
Why is this important: Pope Francis’ blessing for the so-called idea of a Bektashi state marks the first open endorsement by the spiritual leader of one of Albania’s main religious groups. Furthermore, Pope Francis’ endorsement carries an importance that goes beyond the Catholic community in Albania.
Context: The concept of a “Bektashi state” refers to the formal recognition of the Bektashi Order’s cultural and spiritual identity. The Bektashi Order, rooted in Sufi Islam, has a significant presence in Albania, where it is headquartered. Such a “state” would aim to preserve its heritage, promote interfaith harmony, and serve as a global center for its followers.
During the meeting, Pope Francis and Brahimaj jointly signed the Abu Dhabi Human Fraternity Document, a declaration promoting global peace, interfaith dialogue, and cooperation. Signed in 2019, the document is a milestone in efforts to foster unity across religions and cultures, emphasizing human dignity, tolerance, and environmental stewardship.
