Heavy traffic at Qafë Thanë Border Crossing as influx of tourists from North Macedonia streams into Albania
The Qafë Thanë border crossing is experiencing a significant increase in traffic that has led to delays and long queues. Most of the movement is incoming from North Macedonia into Albania, resulting in vehicles waiting in line for over 30 minutes.
Why is this relevant
The long queues at the Qafë Thanë border, the most important crossing point between Albania and North Macedonia, highlight the high number of Macedonian citizens choosing Albania for their summer vacations this year.
To manage the influx over the past two days, Albanian and Macedonian police are operating four joint checkpoints: three for small vehicles and one for heavy vehicles. Two additional checkpoints are on standby, anticipating increased traffic in the coming days.
Other border crossings also affected
Long queues have also been reported at the three border crossings with Greece: Kakavijë, Kapshticë, and Qafë Botë. The heavy traffic is present both for those exiting and entering Albania.
Authorities are working hard to handle the increased flow and minimize waiting times for travelers.
