Former Socialist MP facing abuse of power charges
Former Socialist Party MP Jurgis Çyrbja appeared at the Special Structure Against Corruption and Organized Crime (SPAK) today. He was called as a person under investigation and gave his testimony, which lasted approximately 35 minutes. Speaking briefly to journalists outside, Çyrbja directed them to SPAK for further information and confirmed that he will appear whenever summoned by the investigative authorities.
Why is this important: SPAK has formally charged the MP with “abuse of office,” related to his time as Director of the Durrës Land Registry Office. This case is significant because it represents ongoing efforts by the Albanian authorities to address corruption and abuse of power within public institutions.
Context: This development follows Çyrbja’s resignation from his parliamentary seat just one day prior, citing health issues and the need to focus on his well-being. His resignation came only two days after he was interrogated by SPAK for nearly five hours on October 8. The timing of his resignation raises questions about the investigation’s impact on his political career.
