Albania’s flora and fauna suffered greatly in the past due to excessive hunting, leading to a drastic decline in bird populations, particularly migratory species. With Albania’s numerous lakes and lagoons serving as key stopovers for migratory birds, the country implemented a hunting moratorium that has since allowed bird populations, including flamingos, to recover.

What’s happening

Prime Minister Edi Rama recently shared beautiful images of flamingos at Lake Ohrid, Pogradec, highlighting their seasonal return. Traditionally, flamingos frequent Albania’s Narta and Karavasta lagoons, but they have now been spotted in Pogradec, attracting tourists and bird watchers alike.

The big picture

The return of flamingos showcases the success of Albania’s conservation efforts, reinforcing the importance of protecting natural habitats and implementing sustainable wildlife practices.
