First Festival of Traditional Dances and Polyphony held in Dropull
The inaugural edition of the Festival of Traditional Dances and Polyphony took place in Derviçan, Dropull, showcasing the rich cultural heritage of both Albanian and Greek traditions. The festival was celebrated in a square inaugurated last year by Prime Minister Edi Rama alongside Greek officials, emphasizing the close links between the two people.
Context
This event represents the largest folklore celebration in Dropull, reflecting a longstanding tradition of costumes, dances, and rituals that are cherished and passed down through generations. Traditional folk songs and dances are often accompanied by exquisite costumes, particularly the Dropull bride’s costume, which is one of the most interesting in Albanian ethnography and cultural diversity, meticulously handcrafted by local artisans using traditional techniques of cutting, drawing, and embroidery.
The festival not only serves as a cultural treasure for the locals but also as an attraction for tourists visiting the region. Both Minister of Tourism and Environment Mirela Kumbaro and Minister of Economy, Culture, and Innovation Blendi Gonxhja attended the festival, expressing their commitment to making it an annual event.
Dropull is in Gjirokastër County, which recently celebrated its 19th anniversary as a UNESCO World Heritage site, underscoring the city’s architectural and cultural significance and enhancing its appeal as a destination for cultural tourism.
