Firefighters, military intensify efforts to extinguish wildfires in Gjirokastra

A raging wildfire, which started in Frashtan, Dropull, has continued to spread across the Gjirokastër region, affecting an estimated area of about 70 hectares and threatening a number of houses in the Greek minority-inhabited area. The fire line, which has been expanding rapidly since last night, remains active and is currently threatening the Syri i Kalter (Blue Eye) forests, one of Albania’s best-known natural wonders.

Authorities have mobilized a significant number of firefighters and military forces throughout the affected area, including teams operating along the old road leading to Delvinë. Local residents are also assisting in efforts to control the situation, coming out of their homes to lend a hand.

Currently, 44 firefighting teams, along with 12 firefighting vehicles and 67 other personnel, are actively involved in the operation. Priority is focused on the three affected villages: Muzinë, Pecë, and Kardhikaq, as well as the protected area of Syri i Kalter. Firefighting teams are awaiting helicopter support and coordinating with additional forces from Himara and Tepelena.

The Gjirokastër Police acted swiftly following the outbreak of the fire in Frashtan, identifying and apprehending a suspect linked to the arson. The 39-year-old resident of the village is currently under investigation for the circumstances surrounding the incident.
