European College campus construction begins in Tirana

Construction has begun on the European College campus in Tirana, which opened its doors for the first time this academic year. The campus, expected to be completed within two years, will include four buildings designed to provide modern facilities for the students.

Why is this important: The European College in Tirana is part of the prestigious network of European colleges headquartered in Bruges, Belgium, with another branch in Poland. This year, the college welcomed its inaugural class of 31 students representing 22 nationalities. According to Rector Federica Mogherini, the completion of the new campus will allow the college to increase its admissions to approximately 120 students annually.

Context: The campus project stands out not only for its architectural design but also for its functionality and the services it will provide. The four buildings will include:

  • A library building with additional services for students.
  • Classrooms and teaching spaces, designed to meet modern educational needs.
  • Administrative offices and support services, ensuring smooth operations.
  • A central auditorium, serving as a large gathering space for students and events.

The campus is being built in the area currently known as the “City of Students,” part of the University of Tirana. It will also enhance access for students living in nearby dormitories.

Named after Jacques Delors, the prominent French politician and former European Commission President, the Tirana branch of the European College was inaugurated in October. The ceremony was attended by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, a strong supporter of the college’s establishment in Tirana. The initiative for the college was born from a request by the Albanian Prime Minister and reflects Albania’s growing integration into European academic and cultural networks.

The new campus symbolizes Tirana’s role as an emerging hub for international education, promising to attract diverse talent and foster stronger ties between Albania and the European Union.
