EU Ambassador Silvio Gonzato declared the European Commission’s full readiness to back Albania’s ambitious reform agenda, stressing that support from the EU is stronger than ever as the country advances toward membership. He also called for an acceleration of EU related reforms.
Why is this important: Speaking at the ninth edition of the European Integration School in Tirana, Gonzato highlighted that the EU is prepared to provide the necessary resources and guidance to ensure Albania’s successful integration. With EU membership within reach, Albania has a unique opportunity to capitalize on this strong backing from the European community. However, it is essential that Albania seize this moment and accelerate the pace of reforms.
Context: The European Commission is committed to assisting Albania in accelerating its reform efforts, particularly in areas that align with EU standards and regulations. Gonzato noted the overwhelming interest shown by applicants in the European Integration School, emphasizing the widespread public support for EU integration. He pointed out that all sectors, including local government, NGOs, academia, and the private sector, have a role in contributing to this important process.
Gonzato referenced President Ursula von der Leyen’s recent visit to Albania, during which she confirmed the reality and attainability of EU membership for the country. He also mentioned that the European Commission had recently approved Albania’s Reform Agenda, which is designed to provide immediate benefits by integrating the economies of the Western Balkans more closely with the EU, offering greater access to the common market and financial investments.
The EU’s readiness to help includes providing guidance, financial resources, and expertise to ensure the effective implementation of Albania’s reforms. Gonzato stressed that strong, consistent leadership, bipartisan cooperation, and efficient negotiation structures are essential. He emphasized that Albania must take advantage of this opportunity, as the geopolitical context now more than ever calls for the European Union to strengthen its capacity through closer integration, not just expansion.
Next steps: Gonzato called for a united effort, bringing together all actors across society and the political spectrum to implement vital economic and political transformations. The 2024 EU Enlargement Package, approved earlier this week, lays out a detailed roadmap for Albania, requiring strong leadership, broad cross-party support, and efficient consultation mechanisms with societal stakeholders to ensure that the integration process remains inclusive and comprehensive.
