EU Ambassador to Albania defends SPAK Chief, stresses judicial independence

In an exclusive interview with A2 CNN, EU Ambassador to Albania, Silvio Gonzato, praised Special Anti-Corruption Structure (SPAK) Chief Altin Dumani for his integrity amid accusations from the opposition. Gonzato described Dumani as a professional dedicated to his duty, rejecting claims of political bias.

“Altin Dumani is a man of high integrity who is simply doing his job. He does not seek fame or attention; he is solely focused on fulfilling his mandate,” Gonzato stated, emphasizing that SPAK operates independently, investigating officials from all political spectrums.

Why is this important: The remarks come as SPAK and its chief are under a vicious attack by the opposition and one day after DP leader Sali Berisha made public a picture of Dumani’s wife in what was perceived as an attempt at intimidation.

Context: Gonzato stressed that SPAK, established five years ago, needs time to consolidate. He pointed to its significant achievements, including cooperation with Europol and Interpol on organized crime. The ambassador also called for regular integrity checks within judicial institutions to ensure accountability while maintaining independence, noting the importance of judicial reform in Albania’s EU membership bid.
