Edi Rama highlights Durrës-Prishtina railway as a crucial project for Shkodra’s future

Prime Minister Edi Rama announced that the planned Durrës-Prishtina railway will pass through Shkodra, positioning it as a strategic point in Albania-Kosovo connectivity. Speaking during a campaign stop in Shkodra, Rama called the project a “major national investment already in process.”

Why this is important: The railway will not only boost trade and travel between Albania and Kosovo, but also place Shkodra in the path of a key infrastructure corridor — a move Rama says is long overdue for the historically neglected region.

Context: Rama said the Durrës-Prishtina railway is part of the government’s integrated development plan for northern Albania. Its route through Shkodra is meant to ensure the city benefits from large-scale state investments.

“This is not just a railway. It’s a necessity on every level,” Rama said, calling it one of the most important strategic projects for regional growth.

He described Shkodra as having been “the most left-behind area” in the country, but stressed that infrastructure like this can unlock broader transformation.

What else: Rama urged Shkodra voters to support the Socialist Party in the May 11 elections to ensure continued momentum on the railway and other national projects. He framed the vote as a choice between progress and stagnation.
