Why does it matter: Albania has never had direct flights to the United States, and establishing this connection represents an opportunity for the country. Direct flights could position Albania as a tourism and business hub in the Balkans, reducing travel time, simplifying access for American tourists, and potentially driving up annual visitor numbers. Albania could capture a more significant share of the U.S. travel market, showcasing its scenic coastlines, historic sites, and natural beauty to an audience largely unfamiliar with the region. Improved accessibility would also benefit the Albanian diaspora in the U.S., facilitating more frequent visits and strengthening cultural ties.

Why is this important: The Tirana-Durrës axis is not only the busiest in Albania but also a vital economic corridor, hosting over half of the country’s population and its economic activities. The expansion of this highway is pivotal as it directly supports the economic heart of Albania, facilitating smoother and potentially more efficient transportation of goods and people. Furthermore, with the gradual expansion of the pan-European Corridor VIII this axis assumes a more strategic importance that transcends the border of Albania. Besides the highway, work has began of the modern rail link between the two cities.

Why is this significant: This is a crucial step to enable payments under the EU’s €6 billion Reform and Growth Facility, which will be disbursed upon the completion of the agreed reform measures.

Why is this important: The local government has undergone a series of deep reforms over the past 10 years. The current project grants municipalities greater involvement and responsibilities in key areas such as healthcare, education, and agriculture. By empowering local governments, citizens are expected to benefit from higher quality services and quicker problem resolution. If the pilot proves successful, the government will consider expanding the reform nationwide.
