Democratic Party calls for verification of Mayor of north Albanian municipality
The Democratic Party has addressed a request to the General Prosecutor to verify the figure of the current Mayor of Malësia e Madhe, Tonin Marinaj, under the decriminalization law.
Context
According to the Democrats, Marinaj is accused by Italian anti-mafia authorities of international drug trafficking. The Democrats claim to possess a document from the prosecutor’s office deposited in court, which requests trial against several individuals, including Marinaj, who is described as the leader of the criminal organization.
The decriminalization law in Albania prohibits any person with criminal records, convicted by final decisions of local and foreign courts, from running for or being appointed to high public and political positions.
