Democratic Party appoint new district leaders in preparation for 2025 elections

As part of its preparations for the 2025 elections, the Democratic Party has appointed its political leaders across all 12 districts of the country.

The new appointments are notable not just for the priority given to those loyal to party leader Sali Berisha, whose preferences were crucial in these nominations, but also for the reintegration of figures previously aligned with Berisha’s rival, former chairman Lulzim Basha. The reshuffling comes a year after their split from Basha’s faction.

However, the appointments have caused resentment and have been met with scathing criticism from many quarters, not least, from within the ranks of the Democratic Party. One of the main reasons for the criticism is that many of the appointments are little less than recycled loyalists of Berisha. More importantly, the move has been criticized for the absolute lack of women among the leaders: all newly appointed 12 district leaders are men. In contrast, the Socialist Party has 3 women district leaders while women constitute the majority in Government occupying 9 line ministries and the post of Deputy Prime Minister.
