Central Election Commission to decide on new elections in Himara

The Central Election Commission is expected to initiate procedures on Thursday to declare the vacancy for the leadership of Himara Municipality.

Why is this relevant

The CEC has announced it will convene to examine the validity of the mandate of Himara Mayor Alfred Beleri. Fredi Beleri’s guilty verdict for vote buying was upheld last week by the Special Court of Appeals. This means that he cannot be sworn in as Mayor of Himara because the decriminalization law prohibits any person with criminal records from being elected or appointed to public functions.

In case the vacancy is declared at Thursday’s meeting, the CEC must notify the President of the Republic who, according to the Albanian Constitution, will have to set a new date for partial elections in Himara Municipality within 45 days of receiving the notification.
