Captain who died rescuing tourists in Lake Shkodra declared Martyr of the Nation

Arben Anamali, captain of the tourist boat “Buna,” has been posthumously honored as a Martyr of the Nation after drowning while attempting to save two tourists in Lake Shkodra. The decision was made by the Albanian government and publicly announced by Prime Minister Edi Rama on Thursday.
Why is this important: Anamali’s death has deeply moved the Albanian public and is being hailed as an act of rare heroism. His designation as a national martyr recognizes the ultimate sacrifice in service of others—an emblem of duty, courage, and solidarity. The captain lost his life in an effort to prevent a tragedy and instead became its victim, leaving behind two children and a grieving family.
Context: Anamali went missing earlier this week after jumping into the lake to rescue two foreign tourists who were struggling in the water. His body was recovered on Thursday morning after extensive search efforts. The two tourists survived the incident.
In his tribute, Prime Minister Rama wrote:
“Rest in peace, Martyr of the Homeland. We honor with the highest gratitude of the Republic, Captain Arben Anamali, who gave his life to save two others. Unforgettable, Captain Arben.”
The declaration as Martyr of the Nation is among Albania’s highest honors for civilians and military personnel who lose their lives in acts of extraordinary bravery.
What’s next: Authorities are expected to organize an official memorial ceremony in Anamali’s honor. Calls are already growing for a monument or public space to bear his name as a lasting symbol of selflessness and national pride.
