Bank of Albania marks 100th anniversary with tribute to national currency and central banking legacy
The Bank of Albania is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, marking a century since its founding on September 2, 1925. Initially proposed by Albania’s founding father, Ismail Qemali shortly after Albania’s independence, the idea was delayed by war and instability only becoming a reality over a decade later.
Why is this important: The central bank has played a pivotal role in Albania’s economic development and institutional consolidation. As it enters its second century, the Bank of Albania is being recognized both domestically and internationally for its contribution to financial stability, monetary policy, and EU integration efforts.
Historical context: Originally named Banka e Shqipnis, the institution issued Albania’s first national currency, the gold franc, in February 1926, along with its subdivisions — “lekë,” which remains the national currency today.
At a special academic conference titled “A Century of Central Banking”, Prime Minister Edi Rama praised the bank as “perhaps the only institution in Albania that fully deserves the title.” His remarks highlighted its independence, professionalism, and resilience amid changing political and economic landscapes.
International recognition: Leaders from the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) also addressed the centennial event, commending the bank’s progress despite the many challenges it has faced over the decades.
Governor Gent Sejko emphasized the institution’s evolving role, not just in managing inflation and financial systems, but also in preparing the country for European Union accession.
“The Bank of Albania is not only a pillar of economic stability but a key actor in Albania’s EU integration process,” said Sejko.
Special edition coin: To commemorate the anniversary, the Bank has issued a symbolic silver coin — with a face value of 100 ALL — celebrating its century-long journey. The coin is not legal tender but serves as a collector’s item marking this historic milestone.
