Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti receives surprise summons by Special Prosecution

Prime Minister Albin Kurti has been summoned by the Special Prosecution to provide testimony, a development that has sparked significant speculation. The news was confirmed by a Kosovo government spokesperson who disclosed the summons in a furious Facebook post.

Details of the summons: The Special Prosecution’s letter mandates Kurti’s appearance on December 16 at 9:30 AM. It warns that failure to comply could result in fines up to €250 for each absence or imprisonment for up to one month if testimony is refused without a valid reason.

Why is this important: While the reason for the summons remain unknown, the Kosovo Government spokesperson’s strong reaction indicates that it has caused unease within Kurti’s team. It remains to be seen how Kurti will react and above all, why he has been summoned in such dramatic fashion.

Context: According to the spokesperson the summons came while Kurti was actively engaged in finalizing candidate lists for his coalition, comprising Lëvizja VETËVENDOSJE!, Guxo, and Alternativa, ahead of the 2025 elections. It came as a surprise, with no clear indication of its purpose. In his post, the spokesperson claimed that the timing of the invitation, during the sensitive period of electoral preparations, is politically motivated. “During the 2021 elections, a judicial decision prevented Kurti from running. Now, through this summons, an attempt is being made to influence the 2025 elections. The objective remains the same; only the method has changed. This is an interference of the justice system in the electoral process,” Kryeziu wrote.

What’s next: Prime Minister Kurti is expected to appear before the Special Prosecution on December 16. Kurti has faced legal hurdles before in the lead-up to elections. In 2021, a court decision red him from running in parliamentary elections. The Special Prosecution has not disclosed the reason for summoning Kurti, nor has the government provided further details. Media inquiries directed at both the Prosecution and the Prime Minister’s Office have gone unanswered.
