Albania’s Minister of Interior, Taulant Balla, delivered a comprehensive report highlighting the work of the State Police in fighting crime over the past year. Speaking in front of the National Council on European Integration, in a session dedicated to discussing the progress of reforms in the context of the Berlin Process, Balla underscored the ongoing fight against crime, revealing that 61 criminal groups had been dismantled and 129 international operations conducted in collaboration with partner agencies.

Why is this relevant

The results underscore Albania’s commitment to combating organized crime, improving international cooperation, and enhancing public safety, crucial for its European integration aspirations and regional stability.

What was said

The operations included joint efforts with agencies from Italy, the UK, the US, Germany, Spain, and France and focused on combating drug trafficking and other serious crimes. Minister Balla emphasized the critical role of these partnerships in enhancing Albania’s law enforcement capabilities and contributing to regional security.

One of the noteworthy accomplishments mentioned was the arrest of 3,080 individuals during the “Temple 1 & 2” national operations against drug trafficking. Additionally, efforts to combat cannabis cultivation were intensified with the assistance of military drones and infrastructure from the Ministry of Defense.

The Minister also highlighted improvements in public safety, noting a significant reduction in homicides over the past year, marking it as the lowest in three decades. He attributed this success to the strengthened cooperation between the State Police, the Special Anti-Corruption Structure (SPAK), and the General Prosecutor’s Offices.

Furthermore, Minister Balla addressed the facilitation of border crossings with neighboring countries, particularly Kosovo, benefiting millions of travelers and enhancing bilateral relations.
