Prime Minister Edi Rama announced today that the government is considering and studying a reduction in electricity prices, with pensioners set to be the primary beneficiaries. Speaking from Korça, where he explained the new pension scheme, Rama emphasized that this move is possible due to the stability of Albania’s economic growth.
Why is this important: The announcement signals a significant potential relief for pensioners, a demographic that often faces financial strain. Lowering electricity prices for them would ease household expenses and improve their quality of life. This initiative comes as a result of sustained economic growth, which Rama describes as “quite stable,” allowing the government to discuss and implement policies aimed at social welfare.
Context: Rama’s statement seem to reflects a broader economic strategy focused on inclusive growth and ensuring that the benefits of a thriving economy reach vulnerable groups too. The government’s plan to link pensioners’ benefits to economic performance introduces a new model where future economic gains could directly improve their living standards.
What did he say: Rama highlighted the rationale behind the proposed energy price reduction: “We are studying the possibility of lowering electricity prices. I have specifically requested the Ministry of Infrastructure and Energy to ensure pensioners receive a price reduction, even if it is modest. We are analyzing how this will impact the economy.”
He stressed that the current economic trajectory allows for such discussions: “Our economic growth is quite stable, so it is the right time to have these discussions. We want pensioners to be the first to benefit when economic growth surpasses expectations.”
Plans for gas heating in Korça: In addition to discussing electricity prices, Rama revealed plans for the first gas-heated region in Albania. “Korça will be the first area heated by gas,” he announced. Niko Peleshi, former mayor of Korça, and now head of the Socialist Party parliamentary group and political leader for Korça, will accompany Rama on an upcoming visit to Azerbaijan. This visit aims to accelerate the gas project, which is in an “advanced stage” with guaranteed financing. Rama highlighted the economic impact, stating, “This will certainly have a positive effect on people’s wallets.”
What’s next: The government will conduct further studies to assess the feasibility of the electricity price reduction and its economic implications. Meanwhile, the visit to Azerbaijan could expedite the implementation of the gas heating project, positioning Korça as a model for energy efficiency and cost savings in the country.
