Albanian National Institute of Cultural Heritage approves restoration projects for three major cultural sites

The National Institute of Cultural Heritage has recently approved significant restoration projects for three major cultural sites in Albania: Kanina Castle, Borsh Castle, and the Archaeological Museum of Korça. During its latest meeting, the National Council of Cultural Heritage Material reviewed and endorsed these crucial initiatives aimed at preserving Albania’s rich historical and cultural heritage.

Why is this significant

These projects highlight a strong commitment to preserving Albania’s cultural heritage while improving the presentation and accessibility of its historical sites. These enhancements will elevate the visitor experience, making it more engaging and informative, and ensuring that both locals and tourists can fully appreciate the historical significance of these sites.

Kanina Castle, a Category I Cultural Monument located in the municipality of Vlora, is set to undergo extensive restoration work. The project will include a detailed study of the castle’s conservation status through geological, hydrological, and structural assessments. Planned interventions involve installing safety barriers, stabilizing the land, supporting the base of the slope, and implementing rock anchors. The restoration will also focus on the castle’s structures, creating necessary infrastructure for site interpretation, enhancing visitor experiences, and developing an amphitheater.

Borsh Castle, also a Category I Cultural Monument located in the municipality of Himara, dates back to the 4th-3rd centuries BCE. Restoration efforts will address both the castle’s overall structures and the specific restoration needs of the mosque within the site.

The Archaeological Museum of Korça, established in 1985, showcases the archaeological treasures from southeastern Albania, with a primary focus on the Korçë basin. The museum’s restoration project will involve reinforcing the building’s foundations and masonry, restoring the roof and its structural elements, and repairing the stone masonry and floors.
