Albanian food safety authority blocks shipment of contaminated Brazilian chicken

The National Food Authority (AKU) has blocked a large shipment of 18.5 tons of imported chicken from Brazil after tests detected the presence of Salmonella Typhimurium, a bacterium that poses serious health risks. The contaminated batch was identified following routine inspections at the Port of Durrës and further testing conducted by the Institute of Food Safety and Veterinary (ISUV) on March 21, 2025. Upon confirming the presence of the harmful bacteria, AKU coordinated with relevant authorities to track, verify, and seize the product.
Why is this important: Salmonella Typhimurium is a significant cause of foodborne illness, with symptoms including fever, diarrhea, and abdominal cramps. In severe cases, it can lead to hospitalization and more serious health complications, especially among young children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems. Blocking contaminated food shipments is crucial to ensuring public health safety and maintaining confidence in food imports.
Context: While the name of the company responsible for the import has not been disclosed, the matter has been referred to the Tirana District Prosecutor’s Office for further investigation. Authorities are assessing potential criminal liability over violations related to traceability standards and the provision of false information.
“AKU has taken immediate and coordinated measures with responsible structures to trace, verify, and block the contaminated product, while also initiating legal actions against the liable entity,” the agency said in a statement.
This incident raises further concerns about the quality of imported food products and the effectiveness of monitoring systems. Brazil, one of the world’s largest exporters of poultry, has faced scrutiny in the past over food safety violations.
Next steps: AKU has assured the public that the situation is under constant monitoring and pledged continued transparency. Authorities have also intensified inspection efforts at entry points to prevent similar incidents. Consumers are advised to remain cautious and stay informed about any additional updates.
The agency emphasized its commitment to maintaining high food safety standards and protecting the health of Albanian citizens. Further developments on the case, including the outcome of the legal process, are expected to be communicated in due course.
