Albanian FM reaffirms support for Ukraine on war’s third anniversary

The Albanian Minister for Europe and Foreign Affairs Igli Hasani marked the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine by reaffirming Albania’s unwavering support for Ukraine’s sovereignty and independence. In a social media post, he condemned Russia’s violation of international law and emphasized Albania’s alignment with NATO and the EU in backing Ukraine. Hasani also called for a just and lasting peace to end the war.
Why is this important: Albania has been one of Ukraine’s strongest diplomatic allies, consistently supporting international efforts to counter Russian aggression. During its non-permanent two year mandate at the United Nations Security Council, Albania played an important role as co-penholder with the United States on Ukraine. Hasani’s message confirms that despite the changing position of the US, Albania’s support has not shifted.
Context: Since the start of the war that coincided with the start of Albania’s two-year mandate at the UN Security Council, Albania has backed sanctions against Russia, pushed for resolutions condemning the invasion in tandem with the US and other likeminded countries, and provided humanitarian support to Ukrainian refugees.
“Every effort must be made to secure a fair and lasting peace – for Ukraine, its people, and the security of Europe and the world,” Hasani stated.
