Albania sees steady rise in remittances, boosting economy

Remittances from emigrants remain one of the strongest pillars supporting Albania’s economy and household income. In the first half of 2025 alone, transfers from abroad reached €532 million, marking a 4.7% increase compared to the same period last year.

Why is this important: The continued growth of remittances provides critical support to household consumption, cash flow, and domestic economic stability. This inflow acts as a buffer for many families against rising costs and sustains purchasing power, while also helping to maintain macroeconomic balance.

Context: In the second quarter of 2025, Albanian households received €281 million from emigrants, up from €268 million in 2024 and €230 million in 2023.

Alongside remittances, income from employment of Albanians abroad has also seen a strong rise. For the second quarter of 2025, these earnings hit €178 million, a 10.6% increase from the same period in 2024, when they stood at €161 million.

This steady upward trend confirms that migration continues to play a key role in Albania’s financial ecosystem, supporting internal demand and helping to stabilize the economy.

Next steps: Policymakers may look to channel remittance flows into productive investment opportunities, beyond household consumption, in order to accelerate long-term economic growth and reduce dependency on migration as a primary income source.
